Academia Europaea (also known as the European Academy of Humanities and Sciences), founded in 1988, is an international scientific organization established by the UK Royal Society and several leading national academies representing Europe’s highest academic standards. It comprises over 5,500 members, including more than 90 Nobel laureates.

Membership primarily consists of distinguished scholars from European countries, representing the pinnacle of academic excellence in humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, engineering, and medicine. Foreign membership is granted to exceptional scientists outside Europe who maintain long-term collaboration with European academia. New members are elected annually through a rigorous peer-review process initiated by nominations from two existing members. While the majority of elected members are European scientists, the acceptance rate for foreign members is less than 5%. Those elected are conferred the title of MAE (Member of Academia Europaea), signifying their outstanding contributions and international reputation in their respective fields.
