General Information

As a key comprehensive university, Hebei University (HBU) is co-constructed by Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hebei Province. It is also one of the first-level universities participating in China’s construction plan of national first-class university and world-class disciplines, with strong support from the Hebei Provincial Government.

The university was originally founded as Tianjin Technology and Business University in 1921, located at No.141, Machang Road, Tianjin. It was renamed as Tianjin Technology and Business College in 1933 due to its small scale. In 1948, it was registered as Jingu University with 10 departments of 3 colleges. In 1951, the university was approved by the Central People’s Government to be a public one, which ushered in a new era under the leadership of Tianjin Municipal Government and founded 3 colleges and 13 departments. Then the Central People’s Government decided to adjust the layout and departments of universities in 1952. The Technology Department of Jingu University was incorporated into Tianjin University, while the Finance and Economics Department into Nankai University. Besides, Tianjin Normal College was established on the basis of Normal Educational Department, which continues the history of Hebei University. Its size was increased from 6 to 9 departments in a few years. In 1958, it expanded into Tianjin Normal University, then being identified as one of five key universities in the province. In 1960, this university was upgraded to a comprehensive one and received the name of Hebei University, which was relocated in 1970 from Tianjin to a well-known historical and cultural city--Baoding in Hebei Province. The Technology Supervision School of Hebei Province① and Hebei Medical Staff College② as well as its affiliated hospital were incorporated into Hebei University in 2000 and 2005 respectively.

Covering an area of 2430 mu, the university is consisted of the Main Campus, the Qiyi Road Campus and the Yuhua Road Campus, with a construction area of 1.33 million square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 3.2 billion RMB. There are 15 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degrees, 46 first-level disciplines authorized to award master degrees, 30 disciplines authorized to offer professional master degrees, and 95 undergraduate programs. As one of the universities with most completed discipline fields across China, it offers programmes in 12 major fields, including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management and art.

Currently, there are approximately 42,000 full-time students, including over 6400 full-time doctoral candidates and postgraduates and more than 28,000 undergraduate students. Currently there are 3342 faculty members, among whom 1995 are full-time teachers, 55.69% hold doctorate degrees. There are 67 state-level talents who are academicians of the two academies, Changjiang Scholars, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, members of the National Baiqianwan Talents Program, winners of National Teaching Master, national candidates of New Century Talents Project, National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions or State Council Special Allowance Experts. There are also 330 provincial-ministerial specialists with the title of Yanzhao Scholars or Provincial Outstanding Experts.

HBU boasts remarkable ability in education, with 1 national key discipline, 3 world-class discipline construction programs of Hebei Province, 4 national first-class discipline construction programs of Hebei Province, 3 national key discipline cultivation programs of Hebei Province, 4 characteristic disciplines and 18 key disciplines of Hebei Province, 11 postdoctoral research stations and 1 postdoctoral research center. It has 3 national and regional joint engineering laboratories, 22 Provincial and Ministerial Key Laboratories (base) and engineering laboratories, 17 Key Research Institutes (center) of Humanities and Social Sciences at provincial and ministerial-level, 4 Hebei 2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers, 1 Collaboration Center co-founded by Hebei Province and the Ministry of Education, and 2 key laboratories co-founded with state-owned enterprises. Apart from that, there are 14 state-level Quality Engineering Projects including Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers and characteristic specialties, 17 national Undergraduate Teaching Projects covering professional comprehensive reform pilots, outstanding talents training plans and undergraduate educational practice bases, as well as 126 provincial undergraduate teaching reform projects to improve teaching quality. The university is also the National Cultural Quality Education Base, Further Educational Base for professional and technical personnel and Yan’an Spirit Educational Base.

With an open mind, HBU has established cooperative ties with over 100 high-level universities across the world. It has set up the HBU-UClan School of Media, Communication and Creative Industries, a Chinese-foreign cooperative college approved by the Ministry of Education. It has also founded the Chinese Learning Centers in Russia and Malaysia, and the Confucius Institutes in Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Xavier University of Louisiana, University of Nouakchott in Mauritania and Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Having cultivated more than 3,000 doctors, masters, bachelors and short-term overseas students from over 90 countries and regions, HBU is a pilot university designated by Training and Research Center for Overseas Study of Ministry of Education, and the first one in Hebei Province qualified to receive students awarded with Chinese government scholarships and the first indexed in the Chinese Teaching Bases of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.

HBU has gone through the vicissitudes of more than 90 years since its establishment. In the course of its development, scholars and students from generation to generation have been striving with great efforts to make contributions for the country, thus forming the motto of “Seeking Truth from Facts, Studying Profoundly and Behaving Honestly” and the school spirit of “Erudition, Pursuit for truth, Endurance and Innovation”. Taking this as its aspiration and values, HBU has educated nearly 400 thousand excellent students with alumni spreading around the world, and created a multitude of original and cutting-edge achievements in scientific and technological filed, which brought great economic and social benefits. Currently, HBU is thriving with strong momentum, supported by Hebei Provincial Committee, the People’s Government of Hebei Province and national ministries including Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance. With the opportunity of being co-constructed by Hebei Province and Ministry of Education, all teachers and students are working together to overcome difficulties and striding ahead to build a top-level university.

①Hebei Province Technical Supervision School was founded in 1984, Administered by the Bureau of Technical Supervision of Hebei Province. It is the only vocational school in North China, which aimed to train professionals of industry, business, technical supervision, measurement management, quality management, standardization and information technology. In 2000, Hebei Province approved to incorporate the school into Hebei University, and set up the School of Quality and Technical Supervision of Hebei University.

②Hebei Medical College for Continuing Education was founded in 1949. It was originally named as The Pingyuan Provincial Medical School. After the Pingyuan Province was revoked, it was relocated and merged with Baoding Medical School. It was named as Baoding Medical School in 1958, and Baoding Medical College in 1959. It was renamed several times from 1965 to 1981. In 1983, it was reconstructed as tHebei Medical College for Continuing Education, and formally became a higher institution. In December 2002, it merged Baoding Health School, Hebei Traditional Chinese Medicine School, Baoding Economic Management Cadre School. At the end of 2004, Hebei approved the hospital and its affiliated hospital to be merged into Hebei University. In 2005, the Health Science Center of Hebei University and the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University were established successively.

③The Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University was founded in 1909, initially as an epidemic prevention hospital. It was renamed as Zhili Red Cross Hospital in 1912, Xinmin Hospital of Hebei in 1942, and Hebei provincial hospital in 1945. After liberation, it was renamed as The First People's Hospital of Hebei Province, and Hebei Provincial Hospital. In 1983, it was renamed as the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Medical College for Continuing Education, which was merged into Hebei University in 2005 and renamed as the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University.
